I would like to join....

Hello everybody,

I am Sevim from FLE Department. This is my first grade at the university and I would like to join Turkish Folklore Club. This club separates into three genres; Theatre, Music and Folklore. Actually, I want to take part in the theatre department. Why do I want to join this department? Well, all through my life, theatre appeals to me. In other words, it is always a pleasure for me to watch a theatre play as when I watch them, I grasp a chance to think about what I would do if I were a player. Besides this, an idea that living another person's life and feeling his emotions makes me more eager to join a club like that. When it comes to my experiences, I cannot say that I took part in many plays. However, I have tried to perform in the listening and pronunciation course recently and I enjoyed very much. In secondary school, my classmates and I tried to perform a play, but unfortunately, the assistant of headmaster didn’t let us perform our play. Nevertheless, my desire to play isn’t affected by such manners. In high school, because of university entrance exams, I had no chance to play. Therefore, I decided to join a theatre club at the university. I think I am good at observing, so alongside performance, maybe, I can give some ideas about plays and how we can make a play more attractive. All I need is some experience and so, I want to join this club. I hope, I reach my goals and make everybody happy! :)

“I wish I knew how to quit you, Facebook”   John Green

The writer thinks that in today’s world, people are under the influence of over using social media and also believes that Facebook is one of them. I agree with the writer as first of all, over-using Facebook has a bad influence on daily life. There are many people who find themselves making comments and liking something on Facebook instead of doing their house work. In other words, Facebook retains people from doing daily tasks, and this may cause procrastination which affects people’s life in a bad way. Second, over-using Facebook causes to lose real personality of people and they may confuse virtual identity with the real one. They don’t behave as themselves and show them as if they were always happy and never had hard times since they want to make other people believe that they have the most wonderful lives in the world. Third, giving full attention to Facebook makes it difficult to establish relationships with new people. Therefore, it is hard to socialize with a person over-using Facebook. When an over-user returns to real life, he realizes that apart from virtual friends, he is all alone which causes some illness such as depression or stress. On the whole, I agree with the writer’s opinion that over-using Facebook causes the delay of house works, losing identity and asociality.

OUR PRIDE : AZİZ SANCAR

If I were a jury member of the committee choosing the person of the year, my candidate would be Aziz Sancar (8 September 1946) who is the second Turkish Nobel laureate after Orhan Pamuk. As we know, in 2015, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Tomas Lindahl and Paul L. Modrich for their mechanistic studies of DNA repair. Besides, he is currently the Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is the co-founder of the Aziz and Gwen Sancar Foundation, which is a non-profit organization to promote Turkish culture and to support Turkish students in the United States. Aziz Sancar was born into a lower-middle-class Arabic-speaking family in the Savur district of Mardin Province, southeastern Turkey on September 8, 1946. He was the seventh of eight children. His parents were illiterate; however, fortunately, they put great emphasis on education. Sancar received his primary education near his hometown of Savur. He then completed his M.D. degree in Istanbul University of Turkey and completed his Ph.D. degree on the photoreactivating enzyme of E. coli in 1977 at the University of Texas at Dallas in the laboratory of Dr. C. Stan Rupert, now Professor Emeritus. In addition, his longest-running study has involved photolyase and the mechanisms of photo-reactivation. In his inaugural article in the PNAS, Sancar captures the elusive photolyase radicals he has chased for nearly 20 years, thus providing direct observation of the photocycle for thymine dimer repair. What is more, Aziz Sancar was elected to the Nationai Academy of Sciences in 2005 as the first Turkish-American member. He is the Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Biochemistry, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . He is married to Gwen Boles Sancar, who graduated the same year and who is also a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Together, they founded Carolina Türk Evi, a permanent Turkish Center in close proximity to the campus of UNC-CH, which provides graduate housing for four Turkish researchers at UNC-CH, short term guest services for Turkish visiting scholars, and a center for promoting Turkish-American interchange. We are lucky that we have a successful scientist like Aziz Sancar. He is a source of pride for our country :)

ARTICLE : HOW CAN I DEVELOP GOOD LANGUAGE LEARNING HABITS?

The article I read is about what one can do to achieve successful and good habits in learning a new language and the article gives us seven methods about them. In the article, there are seven methods to make developing habits easier and smoother. These are forming goals, physically assigning a place for studying, pacing yourself, making use of dead time, taking on a 30 days challenge, improving your self-control and knowing yourself. In my opinion, every single method is priceless because I realize when I picture myself developing a language learning habit, I need all of these methods. As an example , “knowing yourself” is a quite important method because no one wants to build a routine around something that’s not meant. To be more successful, a learner should choose the most suitable way for learning and should develop it a habit. As a second example, I can say “pacing yourself” method. To decide how much time to put into studying , one can use the pacing yourself method because every person has a different  time of studying and when this time is overcame , one may burn out. It is suggested in the article that every learner can figure out what pace works and stick with it and  finally , studying for a particular time will become second nature. In conclusion , the one who wants to learn a new language more efficiently and as a more motivated one can develop good language learning habits following this article and in my opinion, in the future, as we are all language learners, these methods can be useful for us.

INDIANS

In this writing, I want to give some information about the Indians. My reason of choosing Indians is that I am curious about their life. Firstly, one of the very first things to be known about the Indians is that there are many types of them. We can recognize an Indian thanks to his tepee, his shining appearance from the moccasins to the headbands, his beautiful hat with feather and his braided, black and long hair, the tomahawk, the drum, the tam-tam, the knife, and the red-stoned pipe which is garnished tremendously and has a body as long as an arm. I think, these things make them cool! :)
In 1541, when the Spanish cavaliers arrived the Great Plains, the sole draught animal which the Indians use was dog. It is interesting that due to the Spanish horses, which escaped, used by the Indians, the unique culture began to shape. For Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapaho and the other tribes which adopted the nomadic life and especially lived in Great Plains and in its west, the horse not only was the most remarkable means which supported the style of life and even contributed to its occurrence but also was an indicator of wealth and statute. In their age, sign language is one of the mutual understanding languages. It is known that Klavvos used this language perfectly. Sign language with the help of the Crows reached the Canadian lands. Similarly, as an example of communication, smoke signals can be thought and I think if we are thinking about their age, it is very useful communication type. Also, the unique Indian alphabet which is only known was developed by Sequoya from the folk of Cherokee and for a language which do not have a written tradition, this alphabet is a peerless example in the history of world. I hope, these information will be useful for you to have an idea about Indians :)
