OUR PRIDE : AZİZ SANCAR
If I were a jury member of the committee choosing the person of the year, my candidate would be Aziz Sancar (8 September 1946) who is the second Turkish Nobel laureate after Orhan Pamuk. As we know, in 2015, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Tomas Lindahl and Paul L. Modrich for their mechanistic studies of DNA repair. Besides, he is currently the Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is the co-founder of the Aziz and Gwen Sancar Foundation, which is a non-profit organization to promote Turkish culture and to support Turkish students in the United States. Aziz Sancar was born into a lower-middle-class Arabic-speaking family in the Savur district of Mardin Province, southeastern Turkey on September 8, 1946. He was the seventh of eight children. His parents were illiterate; however, fortunately, they put great emphasis on education. Sancar received his primary education near his hometown of Savur. He then completed his M.D. degree in Istanbul University of Turkey and completed his Ph.D. degree on the photoreactivating enzyme of E. coli in 1977 at the University of Texas at Dallas in the laboratory of Dr. C. Stan Rupert, now Professor Emeritus. In addition, his longest-running study has involved photolyase and the mechanisms of photo-reactivation. In his inaugural article in the PNAS, Sancar captures the elusive photolyase radicals he has chased for nearly 20 years, thus providing direct observation of the photocycle for thymine dimer repair. What is more, Aziz Sancar was elected to the Nationai Academy of Sciences in 2005 as the first Turkish-American member. He is the Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Biochemistry, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . He is married to Gwen Boles Sancar, who graduated the same year and who is also a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Together, they founded Carolina Türk Evi, a permanent Turkish Center in close proximity to the campus of UNC-CH, which provides graduate housing for four Turkish researchers at UNC-CH, short term guest services for Turkish visiting scholars, and a center for promoting Turkish-American interchange. We are lucky that we have a successful scientist like Aziz Sancar. He is a source of pride for our country :)

YanıtlaSilDear Sevim,
YanıtlaSilYour paragraph is really good. You used scientific words and you also have a professional style of writing. Your choice is an appropriate one for the content. You provided us with so much information about the person you chose. I think we really need to know about him these days because he is currently chosen to be awarded with Oscar and this is an important event. However, in my opinion, it might be good that you mention about his other aspects along with his life story like his point of views, personal affairs and other accomplishments except for the scientific ones. In other words, you can say your personal reasons why you chose him for the person of the year as we know these people are awarded not only for their scientific successes but also for the things they do in their daily lives like charity works or good attitudes toward their environments and in which way they matter for you. Then you can organize your paragraph accordingly. Other than these, your writing is perfect. You don’t have grammatical mistakes and you made suitable use of variety of words. Furthermore, your concluding sentence is good and you linked your sentences well.
Keep writing :)
Dear Ayşe,
YanıtlaSilWhy did you post the same paragraph twice ? :D
Sorry my friend,
SilAs you can guess, I must have clicked twice accidentally :)
